Ann Treer, born in Vienna in 1922, regarded herself as a Hungarian, per her father’s ethnicity. In 1938, when foreigners were expelled from Prague, she went with her father to Budapest. Throughout the years surrounding World War II, she was displaced in Italy, immigrated to Australia, and then eventually settled with her mother in New York. It was in New York that Treer met her husband-to-be, David Vestal, also a photographer represented by Robert Mann Gallery.

Treer died in 1985, leaving behind a very small collection of photographs taken in and around New York City during the 1950’s and 1960’s. Her work is moody and atmospheric, her self-taught print making skills rendered beautifully rich and sumptuous prints.
